Happy Friday the Thirteenth!

This is supposedly the unluckiest day of the year, due in large part to the continuation of some random superstitions. I try not to believe in any superstitions, so I figured I’d expose why so many people have a noticeable fear of this time of year. So, here’s a quick breakdown. Friday is supposed to be an unlucky time of the week because things like Jesus’ crucifixion, the pagan sabbath, and the stock market crash occurred on this day. Thirteen is bad news because it is numerically impure. There were twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Olympian gods, twelve zodiac signs, twelve months in the year, twelve hours of day and night- you get the idea. So, by this logic, thirteen is twelve’s evil brother, kind of like how six is the number of the devil and seven is the number of God.

The funny thing is, Friday is more likely to fall on the thirteenth of the month than on any other day! Look through some old calendars and you’ll see what I mean. Not only is Friday the thirteenth such a common day, but it’s also one of the safest. According to a recent study, this day actually has one of the lowest incidents of injuries, accidents, and crime. Why? Because people stay inside fearing that something bad will happen! That means more hits for the blog though. I guess we have a lot to thank the Gregorian calendar for- oh, and guess who came up with the Gregorian Calendar? Pope Gregory…the Thirteenth!

That’s all for now.
